Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Heston Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Heston is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors, and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with garden care, landscaping, and related outdoor work.
We recognise that high standards of health and safety are essential to delivering reliable services, protecting the environment, and maintaining the trust of our residential and commercial clients.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The aims of this Health and Safety Policy are to prevent injury and ill health, comply with applicable health and safety legislation, and promote a culture of continuous improvement in our work. To achieve this, Gardeners Heston will identify hazards, assess risks, and implement proportionate control measures for all gardening activities.
We review our systems regularly so that our services remain safe, efficient, and aligned with best practice in the gardening and landscaping industry.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Heston has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. This includes ensuring that appropriate resources, equipment, information, instruction, and training are provided so that employees can carry out their duties safely.
Managers will ensure that risk assessments are carried out for key tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work within our competence, planting, weed control, use of machinery, handling of soils and aggregates, and seasonal maintenance. Where higher-risk tasks are identified, additional controls and supervision will be put in place.
Management will monitor performance, investigate accidents and near misses, and take corrective actions to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and regular subcontractors of Gardeners Heston must take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions at work. They are expected to cooperate fully with management in implementing this policy and following all safe systems of work.
Employees must use equipment and machinery only as trained and authorised, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, report hazards, defects, accidents and near misses promptly, follow site-specific procedures at client premises, and avoid any behaviour that could compromise safety.
Failure to follow safe working practices may result in disciplinary action where appropriate.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Gardeners Heston will carry out and maintain written risk assessments for typical gardening and grounds maintenance activities. These assessments will consider hazards such as the use of powered tools and machinery, manual handling of materials, slips, trips and falls on uneven or wet ground, exposure to noise and vibration, working near roads and pathways, weather conditions and heat or cold stress, handling of green waste and potential allergens, and limited work at height within our competence.
From these assessments, safe working procedures will be developed and communicated to staff. Where work falls outside our competence or requires specialist input, such as advanced tree surgery or structural work, we will not proceed without appropriate expertise and controls.
Equipment, Machinery and Personal Protective Equipment
All machinery, tools and equipment used by Gardeners Heston will be selected, used, and maintained in line with manufacturer instructions and applicable safety standards. Regular inspections will be carried out and defective equipment will be removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Suitable personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be eliminated by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety boots, gloves, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, and respiratory protection. Employees must use this equipment as instructed and report any damage or loss.
Training, Supervision and Competence
Gardeners Heston will ensure that all employees receive appropriate induction training covering general health and safety requirements, emergency arrangements, and site rules. Task-specific training will be provided for the safe use of lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge cutters, blowers, and other relevant machinery.
Only individuals who have been trained and found competent will be permitted to operate powered equipment or carry out higher-risk activities. Supervision levels will be proportionate to the experience of staff and the level of risk involved in the work.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Care
Where approved garden chemicals or other substances are used, Gardeners Heston will follow the guidance provided in safety data sheets and comply with relevant regulations. Use of such products will be carefully controlled and minimised, with a preference for lower-risk methods and environmentally sensitive practices wherever practical.
Storage, transport, application and disposal of substances will be managed to prevent harm to people, pets, wildlife and the wider environment.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Arrangements
All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during our gardening work must be reported as soon as possible to management. We will ensure that appropriate first aid provisions are available and that employees know how to access assistance when working at client premises or in public spaces.
Accidents and incidents will be recorded and investigated so that root causes can be identified and suitable preventive measures implemented. Where required, incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities.
Consultation and Communication
Gardeners Heston is committed to open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about working practices. Information about health and safety procedures, risk assessments and updates to this policy will be shared with staff in a clear and accessible way.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We will monitor our health and safety performance through regular inspections, review of incident reports, feedback from employees and clients, and periodic audits of our procedures. This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry guidance, or the nature of the services we provide.
By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Gardeners Heston aims to maintain a safe, healthy and professional gardening service for all those who may be affected by our activities.
